Vidhu Vinod Chopra is the director, producer, and writer of the Hindi-language biographical drama film 12th Fail, which is set to release in 2023. It is based on Anurag Pathak’s 2019 nonfiction book of the same name, which tells the story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an Indian Police Service officer who rose from abject poverty. Along with Medha Shankr, Anant V Joshi, Anshumaan Pushkar, and Priyanshu Chatterjee, Vikrant Massey plays Sharma in the movie.
When 12th Fail was released in theaters on October 27, 2023, it was met with universal praise from critics and became a sleeper blockbuster, making over ₹69 crore (US$8.3 million) globally on a ₹20 crore (US$2.4 million) budget. It received five accolades at the 69th Filmfare accolades, including Best Director, Best Actor (Critics), and Best Film (Massey).
Story
Manoj Kumar Sharma was born in dacoit-ridden Chambal, the son of a clerk. His father, a kind man, has been suspended for striking an unscrupulous police officer. Like his classmates, Manoj gets ready for his Class 12 examinations by making cheat sheets. The local school’s teachers assist pupils in cheating. But DSP Dushyant Singh, a recently transferred police officer, quits lying in the classroom. Consequently, every student—including Manoj—fails the test.
Manoj’s father departs from home in the interim to file a High Court challenge against his suspension. Manoj and his brother own a touring rickshaw to help support the family. But after punching the local MLA goon who was trying to get their customers to take a bus, his brother is wrongly charged with smuggling alcohol. Manoj rescues his brother from the clutches of local police authorities, thanks to DSP Dushyant’s assistance. Dushyant tells Manoj to “stop cheating” when he says he wants to be an officer like him…

The trailer for 12th Fail was published on October 3, 2023, while the teaser was released on August 10, 2023. The Hindi and Kannada versions of the movie were released in theaters on October 27, 2023. Following the movie's triumph in Hindi, the producers said that it would be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. On November 3, 2023, the film was released.
